Meet the Brothers of Evans Brothers Consulting: James Evans

James Evans is the third oldest of the Evans brothers and is a funny, loyal member of the Evans Brothers Consulting team. In his career, James pursued firefighting beginning as a provisional firefighter and working his way to the position of Deputy Fire Chief.

He vividly remembers his early childhood in South Boston, playing baseball and football, visiting the nearby beaches, and running around with the neighborhood kids. He says he has always loved sports, but “was terrible at it.” Growing up around six boys definitely resulted in competition between each of them, although over the years it evolved into rooting for each other’s successes.

Although James has spent most of his life in Boston, he joined the army directly after graduating high school and spent two years deployed near Heidelberg, Germany. He recalls stepping out of his housing onto cobblestone streets and watching townspeople open their barn doors to let out the sheep. Unlike South Boston, the farmland was integrated into the town and daily, a herd of sheep would run along the main road on route to the nearby fields. A young James was surprised at the scene, having only ever lived in a closely populated and highly urban city.

James returned to South Boston at age 20 needing to find employment. His older brother, John, was taking the entrance exam for the fire department, so James decided to give it a shot. A few weeks after the exam, James received his notice of acceptance into the Boston Fire Department (BFD) and began working as a provisional firefighter under the personal assumption that he was merely trying it out. He quickly came to love the fast pace work, the ability to put out fires, and the impact he made on his community, and unexpectedly never left the fire department.

In speaking of his time at the BFD, James describes how he had to entirely rely on his team, whether they were out on the streets or at the sight of a fire. He first began working in the field before it was customary for firefighters to wear air masks, therefore there was a chance that one of his crew would pass out from carbon monoxide. Each team member had to trust that a close eye was being kept on them to monitor the necessary evacuation. James loved the team focus and high level of collaboration in firefighting and describes the friendships he made at the station as “unbelievable.”

Later in his career, James headed the Training Department of the BFD and was in charge of the operations of the Personnel Department, including the Emergency Assistance Program. His work included ensuring the well-being of those working at the BFD, and James worked tirelessly to help solve issues such as personal emergencies, health-related problems, and internal conflict, as well as connect individuals to the appropriate resources. One of his greatest accomplishments is the positive impact he made on the individuals, families, and friends of the BFD, as well as reducing the stigma surrounding life complications.
